BUCK-TICK's momento mori
by Hikari, contributing writer

BUCK-TICK, going past 21 years now, mediates on mortality with the Latin album title “momento mori”. The satiny ebony paper album sets an upper-class mood with a rainbow-splashed skull. Vocalist Sakurai Atsushi croons in his mature sexy voice, stylish Imai Hisashi rocks out (there’s a dose of Lucy flavor), bassist Higuchi Yutaka chills, drummer Yagami Toll arrives with his mohawk, and peaceful Hoshino Hidehiko provides background strings.

The album is filled with new songs, plus the tracks from the latest “HEAVEN” and “GALAXY” singles. Although BUCK-TICK’s theme for this album is “simplicity”, they cross genres and musical eras. The whole album is also chocked full of inside reference that have inside references themselves. So, what of the music? The fan pick is Old-West-tambourine-filled "Coyote", but the one fans will be curious about first is the sarcastic “Katte ni Shiyagare” (F*ck Off!). Track seven, “momento mori”, sticks out for Atsushi’s Okinawan-style singing about life and death (“Ha! Ha! Ha! Remember to die!", Imai adds), and track eight, filthy “Jonathan Jet-Coaster”, will be a karaoke favorite. “Message” is breathy, achingly lonely; Lullaby "III" is gothic, sultry, bass heavy. There is one good pop song: "Tenshi wa Dare Da" (Who is the angel?). On the flip side, I always skip track “Suzumebachi” because the English lyrics are too goofy. Also, why are two songs named “Umbrella” in some form? The English word “baby” could be less abused as well.

At the end, stick around for the engaging DVD “Making of momento mori”, then put the album back on repeat. Let it grow on you. BUCK-TICK isn’t going anywhere, so support them. Buy this album!
