If you are into killing demons and action filled anime with a comedic twist, you will definitely like the anime Saiyuki. Saiyuki is about four heroes sent to restore order to the world after a virus called the Minus Wave caused all the demons in the land of Shangri-La to go berserk. The group of four then traveled west to find the source that had triggered the Minus Wave and destroy it.
The four main characters each have their own unique personalities. The leader of the group is Genjyo Sanzo. He is not your average priest. He smokes, drinks, kills and carries a demon banishing gun. He also wields the Maten Scripture, one of the five heavenly scriptures that every villain wants to get a hold of. Son Goku is a main character, a determined fighter, and a walking refrigerator. In the anime he has a reputation for eating a lot and is often teased by other characters like, Sha Gojyo for example. Sha Gojyo is another member of Sanzo’s party. He is well known for being good with the ladies. Because he was born half demon and half human, he has very distinctive features such as his blood red hair and eyes. Gojyo’s best friend Hakkai is not only his best friend but he is also the fourth member of Sanzo’s group. He is a shy and polite person with a dark past. He also has a pet dragon named Hakuryuu, who turns into a jeep that the four men travel in.
Saiyuki is based off of a popular Chinese novel called Journey to the West. On Sanzo, Goku, Gojyo and Hakkai’s journey to the west they conquer many difficult times. Some of these times had even brought back memories of each character’s morose past. They also encountered many different enemies. Each enemy wanted the Maten Scripture for their own twisted purposes. Saiyuki also has its funny moments, like when Goku and Gojyo have their immature quarrels that Sanzo or Hakkai have to settle. All in all Saiyuki is a very exciting anime that will keep you in suspense and wanting to watch it over and over again.
