During the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival from April 27 to May 7, 2009, PMX was proud to support the latest indie film work of 2007 Guest of Honor James Kyson Lee. His latest movie, White on Rice, in which he plays a co-worker of the main character Jimmy, is a romantic comedy about growing up and having big dreams. One lucky winner, Katie Chenderlin from Huntingdon Beach, CA, won a pair of tickets to this one-night only, sold out screening. We asked her what she thought about the movie and James's performance in it.
PMX Newsletter: What was your impression of the movie White on Rice?
Katie: I loved it! It was so much better than I thought it was going to be!
PMX Newsletter: Have you ever been to an Asian or Asian Pacific film festival before? How did you like it?
Katie: I've never been before, although I have heard of it. I just didn't have the chance to go yet! It was lots of fun, and I would recommend for anyone interested in Asian films to attend.
PMX Newsletter:Would you see more Asian or Asian Pacific indie films based on the quality of White on Rice?
Katie: I would definitely see more Asian films based on WoR. It was a great movie, and I'm sad I don't have much access to other flicks like it.
PMX Newsletter: When did you first become a fan of James Kyson Lee and through what show?
Katie: I have to admit, I only know who he is because of his character Ando on Heroes. That's what I was most excited about throughout the whole drive there - that I would get to see Ando in person! I finally learned his name when I arrived though. :]
PMX Newsletter:What do you think of James's performance in this movie?
Katie: He was great! It was a completely different character from the one I'm used to him playing in Heroes, and he did an amazing job.
PMX Newsletter: What kind of other roles would you like to see James in?
Katie: Really, I'd like to see him in anything. He's a great actor, and seems like a very nice person. I wish him the best of luck in everything he does in the future!
PMX Newsletter: Did you see James at PMX 2007?
Katie: I didn't attend. :[
PMX Newsletter: Any last words?
Katie: Thank you so much for the opportunity to come to this! I probably wouldn't have had a chance to otherwise, since I'm trying to not spend as much money these days. But it was so much fun! Hopefully I can go again another year!
Recap of the PMX Swap Meet at the Monterey Park Cherry Blossom Festival
On April 18 and 19, 2009 at Barnes Park gymnasium in Monterey Park, PMX held it's first ever PMX Swap Meet. There were about a dozen or so vendors, mostly collectors selling their collection of anime, manga, and other specialty items such as lolita accessories or J-rock/J-pop music. People from as far as Kern county and San Diego county braved the heat and the traffic to see the PMX Swap Meet. The PMX Swap Meet area was reminiscent of a convention dealers hall as people of all ages shopped except for one difference: outside a food pavillion sold delicacies ranging from fresh mochi made by Fugetsu-do, teriyaki chicken bowls, and festival favorites such as funnel cake, kettle corn, and Hawaiian ice. There was also another whole section of vendors and even a small farmers market.
There were also three stages showcasing Japanese and Japanese American culture, from magic shows for the kids, demonstrations on how to make sushi, to a J-pop concert.
Please see the sideshow below for images of this year's Cherry Blossom Festival at Monterey Park.
